Be readable, think ‘audience’

Put yourself in your audience’s shoes – in a rush, frantically looking for an answer, and probably on a mobile device.

What does this tell you?

  • Make your content readable. That means writing at the level of your audience (ie, their understanding of a particular topic – are they beginners, experts, or somewhere in-between?).
  • Customise your content. Make sure it looks good on all devices – that means careful formatting as well as avoiding long blocks of text that are hard to read on mobile devices.
  • Front-load your content. So your reader gets immediate value right from the first paragraph – making them more likely to read on.

Think of it this way – being readable means you’re gently guiding your reader, making them more inclined to engage with your content. Now, and in the future.
